Rangrao Patil – Powada (Ballad) from Maharashtra

This video features Rangrao Patil and ensemble singing powada, an oral poetic form that commemorates Maratha heroic valour. Alongside the practice of prose history writing (bakhar) in the eighteenth century, a poetic tradition of popular history called shahiri kavan existed. Powada (“heroism”) and lavani (love song) are two related genres of this performing art tradition.

Rajasthan 2009 – Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, & Udaipur

My family and I took a 6-day road trip to cities of Rajasthan state -Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Udaipur. Along with visiting the major palaces and forts at each one of these timeless cities, we broke our journey along the way in minor temple-towns like Pavapuri and Nathadwara (or Shrinathji).
